PLUNGE POOL & SWIMMING SPA DESIGN

Plunge pool design focuses on maximising functionality in small outdoor spaces through deep submersion and architectural integration. Also called "dipping pools," these compact structures provide a luxury wellness experience without the footprint of a traditional swimming pool. Although we have been designing plunge pools for a long time, in 2026, concrete plunge pools and hot tub designs focus on seamless integration into backyard landscapes using raw, minimalist aesthetics or custom tile finishes.

Design Styles

  • Minimalist Monolith: These designs feature a "poured-in-place" look, often using high-performance concrete that is cast as a single piece for a sleek, industrial aesthetic.

  • In-Ground Spa & Plunge Combos: Concrete is ideal for custom-shaped, in-ground spas or small "spools" (spa-pools) that serve as both a cooling plunge pool and a heated hot tub.

  • Tiered & Built-In: Designers often use concrete blocks or poured walls to build elevated spas that integrate naturally into patios with stone or wood cladding.

  • Decorative Finishes: While the structure is concrete, many designs are finished with ceramic tiles, natural stone, or mosaic glass to add colour and texture.

Key Technical Considerations

  • Foundation: A stable base is critical; a reinforced concrete pad should be at least 4–6 inches thick to support the 3,000–20,000 lbs weight of a filled spa.

  • Insulation: In the cold UK climate, installing closed-cell foam board under the slab can prevent heat loss through the ground.

  • Custom Features: Unlike pre-fabricated shells, concrete allows for custom-built benches, integrated LED lighting, and precisely placed massage jets.
