SWIMMING POOL SPACE PLANNING & CONCEPT DESIGN

We understand that planning a swimming pool from concept to completion involves a series of decisions, from defining the purpose and securing required planning permissions to choosing materials and managing the construction process. Our initial space planning and concept design phase focuses on creating a vision that aligns with your lifestyle, budget, and property.

Step 1: Conceptualise and define the purpose

The first step is to define the pool's primary use and aesthetic. This will guide all subsequent decisions, from the size and features to the overall look.

  • Purpose: Determine how the pool will be used.

    • Relaxation: Consider a shallow plunge pool, a built-in spa, or sun shelves for lounging.

    • Exercise: A long, straight lap pool with clear swimming lanes is ideal for fitness.

    • Family fun: A creative or free-form shape with multiple zones, seating, and features like jets or a diving area can be very practical.

    • Entertainment: Plan for built-in features, an integrated spa, and adjacent areas for an outdoor kitchen or bar.

  • Design and style: Decide on the aesthetic to ensure the pool complements its surroundings.

    • Modern/contemporary: Opt for sleek, geometric designs, clean lines, and neutral colors.

    • Natural/rustic: Choose an organic, curved shape with softer edges, stone finishes, and ample landscaping.

  • Location: Identify the best site on your property for the pool. Factors to consider include:

    • Sun exposure: Find an area that receives ample sunlight for heating the water.

    • Accessibility: Consider proximity to the house and access for construction machinery.

    • Views and privacy: Place the pool to take advantage of scenic views while considering privacy from neighbors.

    • Obstructions: Be mindful of existing structures, trees, utility lines, and the site's geology.

Step 2: Develop a project plan and budget

Once the concept is clear, establish a realistic budget that covers the entire project. This involves more than just the pool itself.

  • Initial costs: Account for excavation, the pool shell, plumbing, finishes, and contractor fees.

  • Extra features: Include the cost of additional features like lighting, water features, decking, and landscaping.

  • Ongoing costs: Plan for long-term expenses like maintenance, energy consumption for heating and pumps, and water treatment.

  • Feasibility study: For large or complex projects, a feasibility study can validate details and establish a robust budget and business plan.

Step 3: Formalise the design and hire consultants

In this phase, your vision is translated into detailed, actionable plans.

  • Hire consultants:

    • Structural Engineer/Architect: Engage a pool design specialist or architect with specific expertise in swimming pools. They can provide 2D or 3D renderings to visualise the final product.

    • Contractor: Choose a qualified pool builder who can manage the construction process.

  • Detailed design proposal: The design professional will create a comprehensive proposal covering the pool's shape, size, depth, materials, and features.

  • Material selection: Choose materials for the interior finish (e.g., plaster, tile, liner) and the surrounding deck (e.g., pavers, stone, concrete), prioritising both aesthetics and durability.

Step 4: Obtain party all agreements and building regs documents, especially for indoor pols.

This is a critical, often time-consuming step to ensure the project complies with all local regulations.

  • Secure permits: Your contractor or architect will submit detailed plans to the local planning authority for approval.

  • Local regulations: Check for local requirements regarding pool size, setbacks from property lines, fencing, and safety features.

  • Environmental factors: Consider local regulations related to water use, drainage, and protected areas, especially in environmentally sensitive locations.

Step 5: Plan for construction logistics

Before breaking ground, consider the practical aspects of the build.

  • Access: Plan for how heavy machinery and materials will access the site.

  • Utilities: Map the location of all underground services, such as power, water, and sewer lines, to avoid conflicts during excavation.

  • Ancillary spaces: Decide on the location for the plant room (which houses the pump and filter) and other necessary facilities like changing rooms or a pool house.

Step 6: Finalise features and finishes

As you get closer to construction, confirm all the details that will make the pool uniquely yours.

  • Water features: Add features like waterfalls, fountains, or jets to enhance the ambiance.

  • Lighting: Incorporate functional and aesthetic lighting, including underwater LEDs, to create a stunning night-time effect.

  • Poolside additions: Select comfortable furniture and plan for adjacent areas like an outdoor kitchen or relaxation space.

  • Safety features: Reconfirm all safety installations, including non-slip surfaces, safety covers, and secure fencing.

Step 7: Plan for maintenance

Thinking about maintenance from the start will ensure the long-term enjoyment of your pool.

  • Water treatment: Decide on the system for keeping the water clean, whether it's a traditional chlorine system, a salt system, or a UV light treatment.

  • Equipment: The pool's filtration system and pump should be sized appropriately for its volume and usage.

  • Maintenance plan: Establish a routine for cleaning, chemical balancing, and filter checks.
